MIAMI — Florida residents picked the shelves clean of bottled water and lined up at gas

MIAMI — Florida residents picked the shelves clean of bottled water and lined up at gas stations Thursday as an increasingly menacing-looking Hurricane Dorian threatened to broadside the state over Labor Day weekend. Leaving lighter-than-expected damage in its wake in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the second hurricane of the 2019 season swirled toward the U.S., with forecasters warning it will draw energy from the warm, open waters as it closes in. It’s too early to tell what effects, if any, the storm will have on Southeastern North Carolina, said Doug Hoehler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Wilmington. All track projections have Dorian heading for the central or southern sections of Florida. Robeson County and the rest of Southeastern North Carolina are on the outside edge of all the projected tracks, he said. A clearer picture of where the storm will go and if Southeastern North Carolina will be affected will develop in a couple of days. The National Hurricane Center said the Category 1 storm is expected to strengthen into a potentially catastrophic Category 4 with winds of 130 mph and slam into the U.S. on Monday somewhere between the Flori...

Gabriele Kuby’s new book, Abuse of Sexuality in the Catholic Church (Divine Providence Press) includes an anecdote which shows up in pitiable relief the glory of the Catholic priesthood and its degradation in in some highly publicised instances today. Recalling a film made about Pope John XXIII in 1965 by Harry Salzmann she writes that the then Patriarch of Venice was walking along the Venetian canal paths wearing a raincoat on top of a black suit: “He sees a derelict priest in a dirty soutane, unshaved and obviously drunk, standing at the edge of a canal. The Cardinal walks up to him, puts his arm around his shoulder and takes him to the chapel of his palace. There he puts the violet stole around his neck, kneels down before him in order to confess. “You see” says the Cardinal to the priest, “to which sublime service we are called.” It is good to bear this in mind in reading the author’s charges concerning scandals in the Catholic priesthood in our times. Relating that she is a convert in later life, Kuby’s book has the convert’s zeal and enthusiasm as she remembers “the mysterious power of the exposed Blessed Sacrament”, the “life-changing grace” of her first confession, her d...

Why The Athleisure Business Continues To Defy Gravity

It’s been about 20 years since lululemon first introduced what are now known as “yoga pants.” Although yoga is ancient, today it seems inconceivable that yoga would be practiced without the relevant apparel. Active bottoms and leggings alone are now a $1 billion industry according to NPD Group analyst Marshal Cohen. But lululemon and other makers of yoga-related fashion aren’t limited to yoga, they’ve expanded well beyond that and most of what they now make isn’t used for yoga at all. For tapping into that trend and expanding it, lululemon has a total company value of about $15 billion. I recently caught up with my colleague Kim Karmitz who has been doing work with related companies. She explains that lululemon is not alone in benefiting from growth in the yoga business. “It’s not just the big players like adidas, Under Armour  and Nike that have grown with yoga,” Karmitz says. ‘“There’s a plethora of smaller companies that have grown up in the same market. They have spawned a much bigger industry than just yoga pants and that’s what we now call ‘athleisure’.” Karmitz says the athleisure market is different from almost anything that has come before it. Often in the fashion...

The seemingly boundless versatility of additive manufacturing makes it an area ripe for fast evolution, but

The seemingly boundless versatility of additive manufacturing makes it an area ripe for fast evolution, but critical industrial applications also demand verification and reliability There is no doubt that 3D printing (also known industrially as additive manufacturing; AM) has set off a true manufacturing transformation, and the chemical process industries (CPI) are among numerous industrial sectors that are benefitting from its use. From rapid delivery of spare or replacement parts to design customization, the myriad AM technologies can help streamline maintenance activities, process improvements and research. Concurrently, materials engineers are actively expanding the boundaries of printable materials to include not only plastics and metals, but also nanomaterials, bio-based substances and more. However, as 3D-printed parts make their way into more end-use applications, and more companies begin operating their own in-house 3D-printing operations, it becomes clear that standardization and inspection are crucial for ensuring safety and reliability. The unprecedented flexibility available to manufacturers with modern 3D-printing/AM technologies also introduces some sensitive issu...

TW Tube Laser and Processing increases service offerings |

A dedicated beam processing line has been purchased. Ficep Orient CNC controlled beam drilling and cutting line introduced. When TW Tube Laser and Processing was established over four years ago, management did not realise that the demand for its specialised services would increase to the extent that it would have to invest in more equipment to cope with processing orders. The company was conceived on the idea that there was a gap in the market in South Africa to process-in-one larger sections of material such as large diameter tube or hollow sections. To justify the investment in one of the first of its kind machines to be installed in South Africa management decided to offer the full capabilities of the machine to industry. TW Tube Laser and Processing have introduced a Ficep Orient CNC controlled beam drilling and cutting line to their services “The BLM LT 14 is a system that can be used to cut round, square, and rectangular tubes, as well as non-tubular open structural sections (open profiles, H and I beams, angle, channels and special profiles) in diameters from 38mm and up to 355mm with a wall thickness of up to 20mm, and it can handle sections 13 metres in length, both on ...

Far out: astronomers identify most distant known object in solar system | Science

A group of astronomers have identified the most distant object ever observed within our solar system. Provisionally named 2018 VG18, but nicknamed Farout by its discoverers, the body is 120 astronomical units (AU) from the sun. One AU is equal to the average distance from the Earth to the sun, or just under 150m kilometres. The previous furthest known object was Eris, 96 AU from the sun. The discovery was made by Scott S Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC, David Tholen of the University of Hawaii and Chad Trujillo of Northern Arizona University. It was announced on Monday by the Minor Planet Center. The same team were responsible for the discovery this year of a minor planet nicknamed The Goblin, 80 AU away. The Goblin’s orbit suggested that it may be influenced by an as yet undiscovered large planet near the edge of the solar system. However, the team said they did not yet know enough about Farout to tell whether it was being influenced by the putative Planet X. “2018 VG18 is much more distant and slower moving than any other observed solar system object, so it will take a few years to fully determine its orbit,” said Sheppard. “But it was found i...

He lay crouched, shivering in fear, panting in the black night. His hair was wet and matted and I knew immediately Popsicle, our 15-year old cat, had barely survived a fight. Two minutes earlier, I was in a deep sleep when panic filled the house as my 18-year-old, Ariana, woke me at 3 a.m. I grabbed my cell phone and in boxer shorts ran around the pool cage and saw the outline of Popsicle shuddering in fear as he lay in a small fragrant flower garden where the pool cage joins the house. I flicked the phone’s flashlight on. Thoughts raced through my head: Is there a rabid raccoon nearby? What’s wrong with Popsicle? Should we take him to the ER? “I need a flat board and an old towel,” I yelled into the night. I thought I was a combination of Hawkeye Pierce and House MD. “I am not afraid of blood or wounds or bites and I can handle this,” raced through my head. “Between the internet and some antibiotics and attention to any wounds we will get through this,” I said to myself. Popsicle continued panting and moaning. I slowly pet the animal and he seemed to calm. I gently moved the cat onto the towel and like a hammock dragged the towel onto the board. He groaned. I left the small gar...

It’s poultry in motion for Ireland’s commercial producers — but don’t be chicken | Ireland

The thigh’s not the limit for commercial chicken producers that are top of the pecking order on animal welfare and food safety In Ireland, we consider ourselves big steak people (great grass, great beef). We love to talk about our fondness for pork, too — the Superquinn sausage, now made for SuperValu, is practically a middle-class cult — and are justifiably proud of our naturally free-range lamb. And yet, like every other western country in the world, we eat more chicken than any other animal protein, consuming parts of 4m birds each week, according to Manor Farm in Co Cavan, one of the largest chicken processors in Ireland. That equates to 35kg of poultry — or 20 chickens a head — every year. It is a little more than our pork consumption, which is 34.6kg, according to Manor Farm figures, but dwarfs that of beef (22kg) and lamb (less… Get The International Pack for free for your first 30 days for unlimited Smartphone and Tablet access.
