John Lewis & Partners Egyptian Cotton Bath Towel Review

These towels went down well with our testers who liked the look and feel of the fluffy pile. Despite being on the pricier end, testers noted they would all happily buy these towels, based on their experience. In our lab tests, they did well for their speed of absorbing water but lost a lot of marks for colour fade. They also lost marks on shrinkage, suffering more than most compared to others on test. There are a lot of size options in the range, from face cloths to XL bath sheets, and they come in 40 colours, depending on your preference. We’ve all been there: a couple miles into what was supposed to be a long outing on the trail, you feel the hot spot burning inside your shoe. A damn blister. Maybe you’re in ill-fitting new shoes or bunchy socks that caused your feet to sweat. Maybe you just have blister-prone feet. Either way, a skin bubble can put an end to an otherwise great day—or lead to some serious discomfort. Don’t despair: we called up John Vonhof, author of Fixing Your Feet: Injury Prevention and Treatments for Athletes ($20, Wilderness Press), first published in 1997 and now in its sixth edition. Vonhof is a former paramedic and an ultrarunner who now works the medical tents at races like California’s 100-mile Western States Endurance Run and the Badwater 135, as well as Decaman, a series of ten back-to-back Ironmans in New Orleans. He gave us his best advice on blister prevention and treatment. They always seem tiny and innocuous, but they can be day enders. “Even a blister the size of a pea in the wrong spot—at the base of...

REVIEW – What’s round, thin and keeps your phone alive? A Pitaka Fast Wireless Charging Pad!

REVIEW – What’s round, thin and keeps your phone alive? A Pitaka Fast Wireless Charging Pad! It can be hard to get excited about wireless charging accessories these days, now that it’s so readily available. It seems just yesterday that many of us were wondering ‘Is it that hard to plug in a cable?’. The truth is it’s incredible convenience has won out, and helps keep things nice and tidy to boot. Let’s look closer at this Pitaka’s solution. Pitaka’s Fast Wireless Charging Pad is a low-profile, Qi certified, quick-charger compatible with any devices that can recharge with the Qi system which really does seem to be most of them. Connection: USB-C on pad, included cable is USB-A to USB-CDimensions: ~9cm diameter and ≤ 1cm profileCharging speed: Supports up to QC3.0 10w quick charging when used with an enabled adapter (not supplied) The Fast Wireless Charging Pad (FWC Pad going forward for brevity) is a classic Pitaka product. It does what it needs to without excess fuss, uses their Aramid fiber material that is on virtually all of their products and just works, arguably better when paired with other Pitaka products. At first, the white crescent on the left edge looks like just a de...

(Yes, this is the third consecutive post about batteries, so please accept my apology and I

(Yes, this is the third consecutive post about batteries, so please accept my apology and I promise next week will be a different subject. -SM)  My daughter is at college 200 miles away from me. She called me on the way to work and said that she thought her battery was going dead, because she got the dreaded “clicking” noise while trying to start it. The battery was replaced about 3 years ago, and the alternator and starter were checked and found to be ok. The car is a 2007 Honda Accord EX-L with 95k miles on it, all service done by the dealer, timing belt changed at 75k, all fluids, everything up to date (I always took it to the dealership; I know I overpaid, but it has a pristine service record). So I’m about to order a battery from an auto parts store that will install it for no charge, I’m cool with that, but is there any advice on what type of battery I should get? I’ve picked one out, it has a 1-year replacement warranty. Should I spend more, or do I just plan on replacing the battery every 3 years or so? The car is pristine, she learned how to drive in that car, and I hate to see her sign up for a new car loan when I’ve had friends that have got 150k + servi...

A nanofluidic ion regulation membrane with aligned cellulose nanofibers

The advancement of nanofluidic applications will require the identification of materials with high-conductivity nanoscale channels that can be readily obtained at massive scale. Inspired by the transpiration in mesostructured trees, we report a nanofluidic membrane consisting of densely packed cellulose nanofibers directly derived from wood. Numerous nanochannels are produced among an expansive array of one-dimensional cellulose nanofibers. The abundant functional groups of cellulose enable facile tuning of the surface charge density via chemical modification. The nanofiber-nanofiber spacing can also be tuned from ~2 to ~20 nm by structural engineering. The surface-charge-governed ionic transport region shows a high ionic conductivity plateau of ~2 mS cm−1 (up to 10 mM). The nanofluidic membrane also exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility, demonstrating stable performance even when the membrane is folded 150°. Combining the inherent advantages of cellulose, this novel class of membrane offers an environmentally responsible strategy for flexible and printable nanofluidic applications. Ion-regulating nanofluidic membranes have been intensively used in desalination (1, 2), osmos...

Setting up your first shop for woodworking is tricky. You’ve got a corner of the basement

Setting up your first shop for woodworking is tricky. You’ve got a corner of the basement or the garage set aside, but you wonder about what you need versus what you want. There are so many machines, power tools, hand tools, and accessories that it seems daunting. And you’re skeptical, too. Everybody’s trying to sell you something. Well, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve boiled this list down to the essentials to help you find your way. But even if you’re already seasoned, we have a few recommendations for you, too. Below are quick reviews of five top basic tools that have either done well in our tests or that we’ve owned and used for decades, turning to time and again. Scroll deeper to see full reviews of these and more buying advice of products that we know and trust. Woodworking consists of many steps, but the first (aside from sketching a plan) is to refine raw materials to give them a straight edge and a flat face and make them the thickness, width, and length you need. From there, you can make accurate and consistently sized parts. Take those parts and join them into subassemblies (such as two table legs joined by one apron). Finally, join the subassemblies into a fini...

It’s Furnace Tune Up Time, It’s Furnace Tune Up Time . . .

All the statistics in the world can’t measure the warmth of a smile, but a good thermometer can tell you why your feet feel cold at night. It’s that time again. You’ve already noticed that the leaves are changing, and have a feeling that frost might need scraping off your car windows soon in the morning. You might have already added extra layers to your wardrobe, and soon you’ll need to start turning on the furnace to ensure that your home is warm enough. If you live in the foothills of the east side you may have already had a few chilly moments. However, before you turn on the furnace, you should consider the importance of ensuring that it is well-maintained. Giving your furnace a tune up is just as essential as keeping an automobile tuned and lubed. Machines need periodic updates and adjustments for proper functioning. How often should this be done? It is recommended that you do this annually before you fire up your furnace. Getting your furnace tuned up will help reduce the possibility of breakdowns during the winter. When you need your furnace to be working for you, you don’t want to be waiting for a repair company to come. By taking the time now, to properly care for your f...

First, the “dad sneaker” trend made those chunky monstrosities your old man rocked the hottest footwear

First, the “dad sneaker” trend made those chunky monstrosities your old man rocked the hottest footwear trend among fashionistas. Now, basic baseball caps that your pop probably favored are becoming the headgear of the moment. Take suddenly cool streetwear icon Jonah Hill as a case in point. The newly-svelte master of making ugly threads, like tie-dye shirts, look effortlessly chic has been rocking dad caps like a champ lately. Just check him out in a classic white and navy Ralph Lauren hat in the photo above, or in another tasteful dad cap in this video for a Palace x Reebok collab.  If it’s good enough for Jonah, it’s probably good enough for the rest of us. So without further ado, check out 15 dad caps that are actually pretty damn cool. J.Crew teamed with Ebbets Field Flannels for this vintage baseball cap with the logo of the Brooklyn Bushwicks, an obscure semi-pro baseball team from back in the day. Todd Snyder teamed with New Era for a more low-key option, crafted in Japanese twill fabric and available in a functional olive green, as well as other colors. We’d argue that trucker hats fall squarely under dad territory. Seattle-based outfitters...

Crescent Moon has been making snowshoes for more than twenty years now, and has grown from

Crescent Moon has been making snowshoes for more than twenty years now, and has grown from a garage-based business to a world-class manufacturer and industry leader. In 2017, the company surprised everyone when it strayed from its traditional aluminum snowshoes and debuted the Eva All-Foam snowshoe. Fast forward one year and the company is now selling a new and improved version (MSRP$180)– which we’ve been dying to try out ever since release day. How does Crescent Moon’s latest foam snowshoe compare to the competition? We tested it in snowy Maine to find out. We have to admit that we were a bit skeptical when we first received this product. A foam snowshoe? A snowshoe without a pivoting binding? It goes against everything we knew about snowshoes, but all our doubts were cast away as soon as we opened the package. The first thing that struck us was that the Eva All-Foam V2 snowshoe is rock solid in its construction. The foam deck is extremely durable, and the straps that hold in your boots are not only quite rugged, but also firmly embedded into the foam matrix so they won’t pull out if you snag your snowshoe on a branch or take an unexpected fall. The bottom of the dec...
